One-string 1–2–3–4 walk

How to play it

  1. Place fingers 1, 2, 3 and 4 on frets 5, 6, 7 and 8 of the low E string.
  2. Play one clean note per finger, then release pressure without lifting far from the string.
  3. Repeat on the A and D strings before returning in reverse.
Read this pattern in words

On low E play frets 5, 6, 7 and 8 with fingers 1, 2, 3 and 4. Repeat the same frets on A and D.

Focus points

  • Curved fingertips close to the frets
  • Only enough pressure for a clean note
  • A relaxed thumb that follows the hand

Common mistakes

  • Stretching from the first fret when the fifth fret is more comfortable
  • Holding every finger down with unnecessary force
Make it easier
Start higher on the neck where the frets are closer together.
Make it harder
Descend 4–3–2–1 without allowing unused fingers to fly away.
