Learn the guitar fretboard through notes and intervals
Fretboard knowledge becomes manageable when you combine a few reliable note landmarks with octave relationships and interval functions. Use those anchors to understand CAGED shapes rather than memorising every fret in isolation.

Begin with the logic of standard tuning
From the lowest sixth string to the highest first string, standard tuning is E–A–D–G–B–E. Adjacent strings are a perfect 4th apart except G to B, which is a major 3rd. That exception shifts some shapes by one fret when they cross the second string.
Each fret raises the pitch by one semitone. Natural notes follow the repeating musical alphabet A through G: B–C and E–F sit one fret apart; every other neighbouring natural note sits two frets apart.
The landmarks and diagrams in this guide apply to standard tuning. Retuning a string changes its note positions and the geometry built from them.
Learn natural notes on strings six and five
These two strings hold the most common bass roots for E- and A-derived movable chord forms. Learn their natural notes through fret 12 before filling every accidental.

Frets 3, 5, 7, 9 and 12 already have visual markers on many guitars. Attach a note name to those physical landmarks, then derive the neighbouring frets using the musical alphabet.
Use octave routes to transfer a known note
The same note name returns 12 frets higher on one string. Across strings, a note on string six or five repeats two strings higher and two frets forward. When that two-string route crosses the G–B tuning boundary—from string four to two or string three to one—the octave sits three frets forward instead.
For example, G at fret 3 on string six repeats at fret 5 on string four. D at fret 5 on string five repeats at fret 7 on string three. The same fret on strings six and one holds the same note name two octaves apart, not one.
Turn note locations into intervals
An interval describes the distance between two pitches. From a root on one string, fret distances 0, 3, 4, 5, 7, 10 and 12 correspond to the unison, minor 3rd, major 3rd, perfect 4th, perfect 5th, minor 7th and octave.
Naming intervals alongside notes makes fretboard knowledge usable. A C note tells you the location; “minor 3rd above A” tells you why that C defines an A minor chord or scale.

A ten-minute fretboard recall routine
- Two minutes: name natural notes on one low string.
- Two minutes: find one chosen note on both low strings.
- Two minutes: transfer each answer through an octave route.
- Two minutes: find a requested 3rd, 5th or 7th from each root.
- Two minutes: place those targets inside one scale or chord shape.

Do I need to memorise every note on the guitar fretboard?
Instant note recall is useful, but you do not need to attack all six strings at once. Begin with natural notes on strings six and five, use octave relationships to transfer them, and connect each root to intervals inside music you already play.
Why does the fretboard repeat at the 12th fret?
Each fret raises a string by one semitone. Twelve semitones make an octave, so the open-string note names return at fret 12 at a higher pitch and the pattern begins again.
Can CAGED help me learn fretboard notes?
CAGED supplies recurring root and chord-tone landmarks, but the labels do not replace note names. Use a CAGED form to narrow the region, then name the actual root and intervals inside it.
